'No Guns Allowed' Sign at Wal-Mart Sparks Internet Protest :: 11/18/2014
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has long been considered a retail giant that is gun friendly and pro individual rights. When it comes to their right-to-carry policies, the company subscribes to local, state, and federal laws. In other words, if a gun owner has a legal carry permit that is recognized in the state that they are in, Wal-Mart allows the gun owner to carry in the store.
However, some "no guns allowed" signs have been spotted at the entrances to some Wal-Mart locations. These signs have sparked protests on the Internet by Second Amendment activists who are concerned that Wal-Mart may be taking a stance against the right to carry.
The "no guns allowed" signs that have been posted at some locations apply only to Wal-Mart associates and product vendors and this information is written clearly on the sign. However, the graphic on the sign itself is the same one used by businesses that have a full ban on firearms.
On the Illinois Carry forum, one poster expressed concerns that the adding of text to the image did not change the meaning of the sign. "As far as I know there is no way to change the legal meaning of the IL prohibition sign/language, it's either prohibited or it's not."
Some gun rights activists think Wal-Mart is trying to be "clever" with their posting of the "no guns allowed" signs. The signs may appease gun control activists by seeming to prohibit guns but anyone with a carry permit will take the time to read the sign and appropriately interpret its limited application.
The signs posted at some Wal-Mart locations have prompted posts not only by gun owners who find the signs offensive but also by gun owners who dismiss them as irrelevant. For example, on the AR15.com forum one user posted, "My question is why does Wal-Mart have to have a sign to remind Employees and its Vendors they are not allowed to carry? Were they not informed during orientation?" On the site Gun Broker the comment, "Are you an 'On Duty' Walmart associate or vendor? If not what does the sign matter?" was posted in a forum thread.
While gun control advocates would like to see a complete ban on carry in retail and other businesses, those with legal carry permits are quick to take notice of any sign that seems to infringe on their Second Amendment rights. Wal-Mart however, continues to honor the right to carry. By all appearances, some locations are simply posting a reminder that the company has a corporate "no guns allowed" policy that applies only to their associates and vendors.
