WV: Local counties see large increase in concealed carry permits :: 04/05/2016

Both Wood and Washington counties have been flooded with concealed carry applications and renewals in the last three months.

The Washington County Sheriff's Department says there's been a 90-percent increase in concealed carry holders for the first three months of 2016. This is up from the last three months of 2015.

"The total for last year, total we had 709, so we're already 383 away from that already," said Sergeant Kim Smith from the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Accross the river, the Wood County Sheriff's Office said they're averaging 30 more new permit holders a month than they were last year.

"Early in 2015 we about on average about 120 new applications a month and new permits issued, and over the past six months that's spiked up to about 150 per month on average," said Captain Mark King from the Wood County Sheriff's Department.

Both counties say they've not only seen an increase in first time permit holders, but an increase in people renewing their permits.

As for why there's been an increase, law enforcement is speculating it's from the increase in terror attacks in recent months and people worrying about their Second Amendment rights being taken away.
