Women using guns :: 10/30/2015

A recent Gallup poll shows a majority of women think having a gun makes their homes safer.

In the last eight years, the number of women taking out gun permits has skyrocketed 270 percent. These armed women insist they have good reason to be.

“I am single, I do live alone and unfortunately my previous relationship did not end well,"gun owner Ivonne Yeste said. "And I am very fearful that some of those ghosts from my past will come back to haunt me.”

“I was always really fearful of guns, then the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting happened and it really affected me at the time,” said Michelle Reynolds, chapter founder of The Well Armed Woman. “I had a daycare in my home with 12 children and two girls working for me. There was a piece of me that stood up and said, 'That’s enough.'"

Reynolds eventually overcame her fear, but said the camaraderie of other women learning how to use their weapons helps.

“I was looking around online to find a women’s shooting club and I couldn’t find anything,” Reynolds said. “I did find The Well Armed Woman online and they were opening chapters, so I decided I would open one and have the women come to me.”

The Well Armed Woman is a national women’s gun club that boasts about 7,000 members with 225 chapters across the country.

“And it’s a situation where there’s no pressure,” Yeste said. “It’s women helping women and supporting women. Who could say anything bad about that?”

“Because of Sandy Hook and having my home broken into, I really have noticed that the police are all around and they’re doing the best that they can,” Reynolds said. “But it’s our citizens, it’s our responsibility to take our protection into our own hands.”

According to the national shooting sports foundation, women now account for nearly four out of every 10 new target shooters. More information is available on The Well Armed Woman website.
