WHY I CARRY: 17 Year Old High Schooler Allegedly Slashes the Throat of 73 Year Old Man on Walk :: 11/06/2014

FISHERS, INDIANA – Here is another one of our “Why I Carry” stories. These stories, unlike our defensive gun use stories, take a look at situations that may have turned out very differently if the victim(s) had been armed. These stories are the “other side of the coin” so to speak and serve as an important reminder as to why it’s important to take responsibility for your own personal safety.

A 17 year old high school senior, identified as Max Winkler, stands accused of slashing the throat of a 73 year old man and shooting him multiple times while the elderly gentleman was on his daily walk.

According to WISH-TV:

Police say a tip led them to Winkler in a wooded area in Fishers on Monday.

After a conversation, they say Winkler was taken into custody and search warrants were issued, including one at Winkler’s home. By 5 a.m. Tuesday, police had enough evidence to arrest the high school senior for murder.

Police say Winkler and Kim did now know each other, so friends and neighbors are asking why this happened.

Winkler did not speak and his attorney entered a not-guilty plea during his initial court appearance.

In many of our defensive gun uses, we point out that guns are often used as an equalizer. Firearms allow the elderly to fight on the same level as someone much younger, faster and stronger.

As always, I have to point out that a firearm may or may not have helped prevent or stop this crime. However, I prefer to have options whenever possible over simply begging for my life.
