Where Does Mayor Pete Stand on the Second Amendment? :: 06/26/2019

South Bend, Indiana/United States – -(AmmoLand.com)- The mayor of South Bend, Indiana is not normally someone you’d think of as a player in a presidential race. Particularly if that mayor is less than 40 years old (NRA member John F. Kennedy won the White House at the age of 43), and also has service in the War on Terror as a member of the Navy Reserve. So, in that regard, Pete Buttigieg warrants attention from Second Amendment supporters, since he will likely be around for a while.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg

His record and campaign positions, though, are typical of his competitors. He’s spreading the nonsense that Bloomberg’s agenda of gun bans is compatible with the Second Amendment (he was a member of Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns, according to Fox News). Like Seth Moulton, he should know better than to paint modern multi-purpose semiautomatic firearms with the nonsense “weapons of war” moniker. He’s posted photos of himself holding a M4 carbine – a REAL “weapon of war” that has the ability to fire in a full-automatic mode – while he served in Afghanistan.

But he is doing so anyway on the campaign trail. Is it ignorance?

That is possible, he is a politician, after all, and most politicians know little about guns, except for what gets fed to them. Like the recent warmed-over BS from 60 Minutes that is a 20-minute infomercial for Bloomberg’s anti-Second Amendment organizations and the campaigns that seem to just copy and paste those positions (with a few modifications) for their “Issues” section concerning our Second Amendment rights.

If that were all, then Buttigieg would be just another anti-Second Amendment candidate. But it isn’t. Instead, “Mayor Pete” is one of the early adopters/supporters of another threat to our Second Amendment rights: Packing the Supreme Court. Now, he has wanted ten appointed in the normal manner, with another five picked unanimously by the ten appointed.

With recent appointments, the Supreme Court is now the friendliest it has ever been towards the Second Amendment. The margin is still 5-4, though, and Roberts is arguably now the swing vote. While Roberts voted in the majority of the Heller and McDonald decisions, he has faced pressure in the past – and may or may not have buckled on unrelated cases.

Given that his official positions include support for gun licensing (which NRA defeated in 1968 – something many of its critics fail to give it credit for), as well as his call for banning modern multi-purpose semiautomatic firearms, it’s a safe bet that Buttigieg’s picks will want to overturn Heller and McDonald, as well as cases that reinforced freedom of speech.

But wait, there is more.

Buttigieg also wants to ditch the Electoral College. Now, we’ve discussed the National Popular Vote before at Ammoland, especially when states hand their voice over to California. In essence, it’s a way to rig the system against Second Amendment supporters.

While his campaign seems to be stumbling in the wake of a police shooting in South Bend, Buttigieg is young enough to make a comeback. Remember, Joe Biden first ran for President three decades ago, and wasn’t much older that “Mayor Pete.” It is best to keep his anti-Second Amendment record fresh in our memories.
