When Obama Calls for More Gun Control, He Might Not Want to Use These Two Charts for Ammunition . . . :: 12/08/2015

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said on Sunday that President Obama will use part of his primetime national address in the aftermath of San Bernardino to call on Congress to enact stricter gun control legislation.

Speaking on “Meet the Press,” Lynch said:

“What you’re going to hear from him is a discussion about what government is doing to ensure all of our highest priority – the protection of the American people.”

Lynch said that Obama will ask “Congress to review measures and take action.” Her office later confirmed that he will specifically call on Congress to review various gun control measures.

Chances are, he won’t be sending these two charts to Capitol Hill for review:

As reported by the American Enterprise Institute:

According to data retrieved from the Centers for Disease Control, there were 7 firearm-related homicides for every 100,000 Americans in 1993. By 2013 (most recent year available), the gun homicide rate had fallen by nearly 50% to only 3.6 homicides per 100,000 population.

Proponents of stricter gun laws are fond of reminding us that there are more privately-owned firearms in the country than there are people.

However, as the second chart illustrates, while the percentage of privately-owned guns has increased by 56%, the gun homicide rate has decreased by 49% over the same period.

During the interview, Lynch also reiterated that the San Bernardino shooting investigation is a “terrorism investigation” because of the “indications that we do have of radicalization.”
