Washington Self-Defense: Sporting goods employee shoots robbery suspect trying to steal firearms from store :: 01/29/2021
BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A sporting goods employee that "feared for his life" shot a robbery suspect in the chest after he tried to use a hammer to smash glass, protecting firearms in the store, according to police.
Authorities said a 37-year-old man was shot Jan. 28 by an employee of the Yeager's Sporting Goods on Northwest Avenue. The suspect was using a hammer to smash the glass on a gun case with the intention of stealing several guns, authorities said.
Officers said the suspect was yelled at several times to stop breaking the glass when the employee pulled out his concealed firearm and shot the suspect once in the chest. The employee told police he was fearing for his life. Police found the suspect lying on the floor at about 11:15 a.m. with a gunshot wound to his chest.
He was being detained by store employees, while emergency crews took him to Harborview Medical Center for treatment. The employee at Yeager’s Sporting Goods did not sustain any injuries during the robbery, police said.
Authorities were called to the Haggen Foods store on Meridian Street at about 11:04 a.m. for a robbery, with two men accused of stealing multiple bottles of liquor worth over $515. The suspects implied they had guns in order to intimidate the employees not to follow them, authorities said.
The second suspect in the robbery, a 41-year-old man, was interviewed about both robberies, even though he never entered the sporting goods store.
Investigators said the injured robbery suspect will face charges for robbery first degree, robbery second degree and theft of a firearm. Police said he is a convicted felon and he could face further charges.
