Vermont Self-Defense: Police investigate Royalton shooting :: 04/15/2020

ROYALTON — A 23-year-old Arizona man was treated at the hospital after he was shot in the leg Wednesday night, according to a news release from Vermont State Police.

Nicholas Schultz, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., was released from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on Thursday afternoon, the release said.

The incident happened around 10 p.m. Wednesday at 2359 Happy Hollow Road in Royalton. When police responded to the home after a report of a shooting, they found Schultz with a gunshot wound to the leg, the release said.

Vermont State Police were investigating the incident Thursday and declined to comment.

Windsor County State’s Attorney Ward Goodenough said the investigation is ongoing and also declined comment.

A silver Honda pickup truck with one door open was parked in the driveway of the Happy Hollow Road home Thursday, but no one was available to talk.

The home, which sits on 3.7 acres near the intersection with Rix Road, is owned by Drew and Lori Brodeur, who also own an adjacent property on Rix Road, according to property records on the Royalton assessor’s website.

A message to Drew Brodeur’s cellphone Thursday was returned with the reply, “Do not contact again.”

Neighbors at a house next to the Happy Hollow Road home did not answer the door Thursday. An empty gun holster sat on the doorstep.

The shooting is the second in the town over the past month.

On March 17, George Sun, 41, was killed and his friend, 26-year-old Dakota Fielder was injured in an early-morning shooting outside a home on Route 14 across from Lyon Road, according to Vermont State Police.

The day after the shooting, police charged Francis Phelps III, 28, with second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a weapon, and possession of a firearm in relation to the incident.

Phelps has pleaded not guilty.

Happy Hollow Road was also the site of a fatal shooting in March 2018 when Frank Sanville, 72, allegedly entered the home of his estranged wife, Wanda Sanville, and shot her to death in the living room, according to prosecutors.

Sanville pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, three felony counts of aggravated assault and a firearms charge during a hearing shortly after the incident.

His trial was scheduled to start in mid-May but it has been postponed due to the outbreak of COVID-19, Goodenough said.

He added that a defense attorney for Sanville has filed a motion to have him released from jail until his trial, due to the outbreak.

Windham County Judge John Treadwell will decide on that motion following a hearing next week.
