Two Largest Gun Rights Organizations Are Setting Up to Block Obama's Latest Gun Control Attempt :: 07/24/2015

Two of the country’s most influential gun rights organizations have plans to thwart the Obama administration from implementing any new, sweeping gun control measures.

On Saturday, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Obama administration would soon push to implement a new gun control measure, one that aims to ban those on Social Security who lack the mental capacity to “manage their own affairs” from owning firearms.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, both the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) plan to fight that new measure from taking effect. Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA’s lobbying arm, NRA-ILA, said the organization will be doing everything in its power to prevent the administration from implementing the new measure:

“The Obama administration will stop at nothing to strip as many people as possible of their Second Amendment rights. The NRA will employ all means available to prevent the implementation of such a widespread injustice.”

During a recent interview with NRA News’ “Cam and Company,” Cox went a bit further, saying he was working in conjunction with Congress to try to force President Obama to “immediately suspend” his efforts:

“We’re going to work with Congress so that if he doesn’t do it voluntarily, which we obviously don’t expect him to, we’re going to make him do it involuntarily.”

While the NRA is taking the legislative path to prevent the Obama administration from implementing their new plan, the SAF is choosing to take a different path.

Alan Gottlieb, the organization’s founder, told the Free Beacon the plan is to sue the Obama administration if it continues to move forward with the implementation of these newly proposed regulations:

“If the Obama Administration does ahead with this plan we will take them to court. This proposed attack on the Second Amendment cannot be allowed to stand.”

The disapproval from the two powerful lobbying groups is certainly catching the attention of Congress.

In fact, Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee have already sent a letter to acting Social Security Commissioner Carolyn Colvin addressing their concerns. In the letter, the lawmakers inform Colvin that divulging the personal information to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NCIS) that is required for the new regulations to work, is not lawful.

Further, they say that “old age or a disability doesn’t make someone a threat to society.”

Lawmakers have requested a response to their letter from Commissioner Colvin by July 31st.
