Trump to name Supreme Court nominee soon after taking office :: 12/15/2016

WASHINGTON – Donald Trump plans to name his Supreme Court nominee very quickly — around the time he’s sworn-in as the 45th president, his incoming chief of staff said Wednesday.

“That’s going to be something that we’re going to start after the New Year, and certainly by the time we get to inauguration, either shortly before or shortly thereafter,” Reince Priebus told Hugh Hewitt’s radio show.

During the heated campaign, Trump released the names of 21 conservatives on his short-list for the Supreme Court. His picks were praised by Republicans eager to cement the conservative majority on the high court.

Hewitt noted some of Trump’s picks are in their 40s and 50s. Priebus said the Trump Administration will factor in the age of a potential nominee who would be appointed for life.

“I tend to believe younger is better, too, but I can tell you what the President believes is that the most qualified, best person to serve on the Supreme Court is what’s most important,” Priebus said.

“Certainly longevity’s a factor, but it’s just a factor. Competence and having the best possible person nominated is what’s most important.”

The Supreme Court has operated since February with a 4-4 split following the death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia.

President Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland, but the GOP-led Senate refused to take a vote on his confirmation, which would have tipped the balance of the court to liberal.

Trump said he’ll make sure his nominee is “very pro-Second Amendment” and anti-abortion.

“I’m pro-life,” Trump told 60 Minutes last in November. “The judges will be pro-life.”
