Trump Rips Dems At Rally: With The Democrats, There Is No Second Amendment :: 08/03/2019
On Thursday, President Trump spoke at a rally in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he slammed the Democrats, asserting, “And just remember, with the Democrats, there is no Second Amendment. You can forget about ‘keep and bear arms.’ You can forget it.”
Just prior to those remarks, Trump brought the crowd to its feet when he proclaimed, “We will defend privacy, free speech, religious liberty, and the right to keep and bear arms.” That triggered a standing ovation. He continued:
And just remember, with the Democrats, there is no Second Amendment. You can forget about “keep and bear arms.” You can forget it. Above all, we will never stop fighting for the values that bind us together as one America. We will never, ever, stop fighting. We support, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. We stand with our incredible heroes of law enforcement. We believe in the dignity of work and we believe in the sanctity of life and we believe that faith in family, not government and bureaucracy, are the true American way. We believe that children should be taught to love our country, honor our history and always be proud, patriotic Americans. And we will always live by the words of our national motto: In God We Trust.
On Friday, CNN national security correspondent Jim Sciutto reported that he had spoken to former members of the Secret Service who expressed concern over Trump’s remarks. He stated:
An official with the U.S. Secret Service tells me that the Secret Service has spoken to the Trump campaign regarding his Second Amendment comments. In fact, I'm told there has been more than one conversation regarding those comments with the Trump campaign. I'm told by the Secret Service that his response, the campaign's response, was that he did not intend to incite violence, but I’ll tell you Brooke, I’ve been speaking to a number of former Secret Service agents as s well. They have said that these comments are the kinds that are taken very seriously; that if, for instance, a private citizen were to say the, that private citizen, you or me (sic) would certainly be interviewed by the Secret Service but with this added detail: that because Donald Trump has such a large following, that in fact, the potential danger of comments like that could have greater impact because people listen to them, and that could be a deranged person perhaps, but those comments have an effect.
But Trump may have a point: in March, Democrats introduced a resolution in the Hawaii Senate urging U.S. Congress to "consider and discuss whether the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution should be repealed or amended to clarify that the right to bear arms is a collective, rather than individual, constitutional right."
In May, National Review noted, “More than a third of the Democratic party would do away with the Second Amendment, a survey by The Economist and YouGov revealed.”
Reason.com commented in June, “The New York Times recently asked 21 Democratic presidential contenders a question about firearms, and none of them advocated gun control. Instead they called for ‘common-sense gun safety,’ a euphemism that reflects a general caginess about how far they would go in restricting the constitutional right to keep and bear arms. 'In an ideal world,' the Times asked, ‘would anyone own handguns?’ Many of the answers reinforce the impression that the Democratic Party is increasingly hostile to the Second Amendment.”
