Trump pitch to religious voters: Catholics like their Second Amendment :: 08/08/2020

President Trump highlighted his support for Second Amendment protections on Tuesday in a pitch to Catholic voters.

"These people are going to take all of your rights away, including Second Amendment, because, you know, Catholics like their Second Amendment," Trump told the Eternal Word Television Network, a Catholic news network. "So I saved the Second Amendment. If I wasn't here, you wouldn't have a Second Amendment."

Trump's comments came after host Tracy Sabol asked him if he had any particular message he thought Catholic audiences needed to hear. Trump rolled his Second Amendment defense into a wider comment on how if former vice president Joe Biden is elected, he will oppose the interests of "anybody having to do with, frankly, religion, but certainly the Catholic church."

"Pro-life is your big thing," Trump said. "You won't be on that side of the issue, I guarantee, if the radical Left — because they're going to take over. They're going to push him around like he was nothing."

Trump often combines his commitment to religious liberty with a commitment to the Second Amendment. In June, after a series of unfavorable Supreme Court decisions, he tweeted that if "the Radical Left Democrats assume power, your Second Amendment, Right to Life, Secure Borders, and Religious Liberty, among many other things, are OVER and GONE!"

Trump's anti-abortion campaign coalition in July decided to broaden its field of issues to include defending American history and statuary. Trump campaign spokeswoman Mercedes Schlapp said, citing Trump's "inspirational" speech at Mount Rushmore, that Republicans should wage a larger culture war.

“This is all part of the culture of life,” she said in reference to Trump's speech. “We want to protect life. We don’t want to tear it down. I think those are the two areas that are a big contrast point with Joe Biden.”
