Tom Wolf - Talking Out of BOTH Sides of His Mouth! :: 08/03/2014

Democrat for governor Tom Wolf claims to be "a different type of candidate," but it's starting not to look that way.

Take taxes, for example.

Wolf was recently criticized in a political ad by his Republican opponent, Gov. Tom Corbett, who suggested the building-supply company Wolf owns avoided paying Pennsylvania taxes by incorporating in Delaware — using the so-called Delaware tax loophole.

The Corbett campaign also criticized Wolf's advocacy for certain tax increases while he served as the state's revenue secretary under Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell.

A Wolf spokesman responded by saying the Wolf Organization, a privately held company chaired by the candidate, would not make any information available about its tax payments in Pennsylvania.

Michael Newsome, the Wolf Organization's chief financial officer and treasurer of the campaign, said previously that the company under Wolf has never used the Delaware loophole.

That's apparently the case "under Wolf." The private equity firm that purchased the company from Wolf moved the charter to Delaware in 2006.

But Wolf has not switched the charter back to Pennsylvania since buying back the company in 2009.

Yet as late as February of this year, Wolf said, "I would do everything in my power [as governor] to make sure that the Delaware loophole ends as an option for companies."

The Department of Revenue won't disclose information on Wolf's company — or any other. So it's difficult to say which companies pay corporate net income taxes in Pennsylvania.

But why would Wolf continue to have his company charter in Delaware, if there wasn't a tax advantage to be had?

Seems to be another case of a politician talking out of both sides of his mouth.
