Texas Self-Defense: Man shoots burglar who used doggie door :: 07/01/2015

SAN ANTONIO - A man who officers say broke into a home through a doggie door was shot by the homeowner Thursday morning.

The incident happened in the 1400 block of Vanderbilt, near South Walters Avenue on the East Side, shortly after 10a.m.

Preliminary information at the scene indicated the suspect got into the home through the doggie door before they were spotted by the homeowner inside the house.

Officers say the homeowner grabbed a gun and shot the suspect. The suspect was shot multiple times, including once in the head. He was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Police said during the summer months burglars expect you to be away from home during the day. Which is what happened in this case, however the homeowner returned unexpectedly and put an end to the would-be burglars plans.

"The homeowner came home and noticed there was someone in his house without his consent," said Officer Douglas Greene. "And was going through his property."

That's when police said the homeowner shot the man multiple times, including  in the head and was transferred to SAMMC in critical condition.

"He actually has life threatening injuries," said Officer Greene.

Police said the only point of entry they could find was the home's less than large doggie door.

"That is still an opportunity for someone to get in your house," said Greene. "Depending on the size of your dog."

Police wouldn't say if the homeowner had a license to carry the firearm he used, but said that's not really even a factor since he was on his own property.

However they are investigating the shooting as a homicide as is protocol.

"The homeowner was very cooperative," said Greene. "And was transferred downtown to be interviewed by detectives."

Sources tell Fox San Antonio  the homeowner was a longtime business owner of a security company.
