Tennessee Law: Create A Gun-Free Zone At Your Own Risk :: 07/03/2016

A new Tennessee law that took effect Friday will make anyone who establishes a gun-free zone liable for injuries suffered by gun owners while on their property.

The law, which was passed earlier this year, says it protects the rights of individuals to control their property but also has an eye out for the Second Amendment rights of gun owners.

“It is the intent of this section to balance the right of a handgun carry permit holder to carry a firearm in order to exercise the right of self-defense and the ability of a property owner or entity in charge of the property to exercise control over governmental or private property,” the bill reads.

“The purpose of the law is to make the business owner responsible for the safety of his or her customers, since their own policies removed the customer’s ability to carry a gun and protect themselves and their families,” wrote Michael Cantrell on Allen B. West.

“Hopefully this legislation will inspire businesses to ease restrictions on customers carrying weapons, which in turn will make terrorists and criminals think twice before attempting to pull off a mass shooting,” he wrote.

Tennessee’s action is a bit of basic common sense, Andrew Mark Miller wrote on Young Conservatives.

“Most people who are familiar with the facts of the gun control situation know that gun-free zones are a bad idea. In fact, the vast majority of mass shootings happen in areas where guns aren’t allowed,” he wrote.

“Now, the state of Tennessee is pushing back and basically telling businesses that establish gun-free zones that they are doing it at their own risk,” Miller added. “Awesome.”

“It simply makes no sense and it’s a shame that liberals refuse to enact common sense ideas like armed guards at schools and eliminating areas where killers have a lot of options. Hopefully more states make moves like this,” he wrote.
