Students robbed at gunpoint, pepper sprayed outside library :: 11/05/2015

ATLANTA -- Students are on edge about two separate attacks on a public street within the Clark Atlanta University campus. Both victims were pepper sprayed and one was robbed at gun point.

The attacks happened outside the Robert W. Woodruff Library which is used by students at several surrounding schools.

The attacks happened twice in less than a week. All the victims are female, and it may have been the same person behind the attacks.

"I wasn't really sure what was going on. There was a lot of commotion," Anessa Trask said.

Trask stumbled upon the victim of Saturday's attack just after someone pepper sprayed the student and stole her iPhone.

"She had her hands on her eyes. She was still wiping her eyes so I'm guessing it was still stinging," she said.

Both attacks happened before sunset. The suspect in both attacks was in a dark SUV, and there's not much more of a description.

"A lot of people are concerned. They want to feel protected and they want officers to be around at all times," Trask said.

"Our primary concern is the safety of our students, but at the end of the day this really is a community problem," explained Clark Atlanta spokesperson Donna Brock.

Brock said the school's open gates present a safety challenge. However since the attacks, the school has increased patrols on campus and sent out an email alert, in addition to hosting safety town halls with self- defense advice.

"To be aware of their surroundings, to put their valuables away and to be safe because we know that nationally criminals target open campus populations," Brock said.

These attacks put students from several schools on edge because of the wide range of students that use this library. Brock said it serves Morehouse College, Spellman College and the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC).

"Now it's not only the Clark Atlanta University is affected. We also have the other students that go to institutions that are near us being affected as well," Trask said.

The suspect in both attacks was riding in a dark SUV, possibly a Ford Expedition, that pulled up next to the students before the attack. Clark Atlanta Police is leading this investigation but it was partnered with APD to help patrol the campus.
