Student columnist addresses danger of gun-free zones :: 11/08/2018

A college student in Alabama says mass shootings in gun-free zones emphasize the need for campus carry.  Michael Jones of Auburn University voiced his opinion in a column for The Plainsman, the student newspaper affiliated with Auburn. Jones tells OneNewsNow that the university has not had an incident involving an armed gunman, but he says Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh had not had one either until last month's deadly shooting.

"You see all these mass shootings and gun-free zones – and then you realize you are in a gun-free zone and you get worried," says Jones. "You don't have to be actively worried, but there's nothing that makes Auburn special to where it can't happen here. It can happen anywhere."

Pointing to information the Crime Prevention Research Center, Jones says most of all mass public shootings between 1950 and May 24th of this year were recorded in gun-free zones.

"You realize I'm in one of these zones, most of them happen here – and that just draws worry out of someone," he continues. "We are a state that allows colleges to decide if they want to carry guns on campus, and I don't think any of the [colleges] in Alabama allow you to carry, which is weird being a heavily Red state that is very in favor of guns."

Jones is a senior in business at Auburn and contributes to The College Fix, a conservative blog, and the Lone Conservative.
