Still Fighting HUGE Lawsuit Over Anti-Gun Doc, Katie Couric Is Set For Move Nobody Expected :: 12/22/2016

For Katie Couric — once a broad-smiling, high-profile darling of the big-three-network news set — it’s like déjà vu all over again.

Currently the global news anchor for Yahoo, Couric made big news herself earlier this year when she and her creative partner in an independent production company were hit with a $12 million defamation suit. The pair were accused of manipulating footage for a gun control documentary called “Under the Gun” in a way that Second Amendment supporters who are suing her claim made them appear foolish and ignorant.

Now, even as that lawsuit proceeds, Couric is making news again for the fact that she will be back on network television in a familiar role.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Couric will be filling in at the anchor desk of the “Today” show next month. She’ll once again be alongside Matt Lauer, this time for a week of substituting for Savannah Guthrie, who is on maternity leave.

In sharing the news of Couric’s albeit brief return to the popular morning program, The Times didn’t mention the lawsuit resulting from the controversial documentary for which the 59-year-old Couric served as executive producer and on-camera talent.

She has since apologized for the poor judgment shown in the highly questionable “Under the Gun” editing.

Couric became the most popular personality in TV news when she was co-anchor of “Today” for some 15 years, from 1991 to 2006. She broke with that job in order to break a glass ceiling, jumping from NBC to CBS to become the first solo female anchor of a major network evening newscast.

While there’s no confirmation of any connection with possible financial issues at her current employer, Yahoo, it’s certainly reasonable to note that Couric may have a keen eye on the internet company’s money woes resulting from a recently reported cyberattack that may have compromised some 1 billion customer accounts.

The big question now, more than ever, is whether Yahoo’s latest troubles will scare off Verizon Communications Inc., which agreed in July to buy the company’s web business for $4.8 billion.

Regarding Couric’s expected fill-in work at the NBC morning show, curiously, a piece in The New York Post in March of last year noted that the former star of the program was “not welcome” back on the set of “Today.”

Post columnist Emily Smith quoted unnamed sources at the peacock network as saying:

“There’s still a lot of people at the show who worked with her back in the day, and she wasn’t very nice to work with, especially toward the end.”

So, maybe things have changed at NBC. Maybe Katie Couric, despite her legal battle with Second Amendment activists — or possibly because of it — is now more welcome at the network. After all, former NBC News star Brian Williams, who lost his “Nightly News” anchor chair after being exposed for shady reporting, has found a home on MSNBC.

For Katie and the “Today” audience during the first week in January, 2017, maybe it really will be déjà vu all over again.
