State Police: Four shotguns missing after falling out of SU public safety truck :: 02/02/2016

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- State Police say four shotguns fell out of a Syracuse University Public Safety truck after a training exercise and have not been recovered. According to State Police, SU Public Safety officers completed their annual certification at the Elbridge Rod and Gun club on October 16th and put four shotguns in the back of a truck.

The SU Public Safety officers then went to lunch at Tres Primos restaurant in Elbridge. After they parked the truck, one of the officers noticed that the truck's tailgate had fallen down and the four shotguns were missing.

The Public Safety officers went to the New York State Police barracks in Elbridge to report that the guns had been lost. State Police spokesman Jack Keller says the SU officers and State Police Officers retraced the trucks route but were not able to find the four shotguns. SU Public Safety reported to State Police that the shotguns were unloaded when they fell out of the truck.

Chief of the Department of Public Safety Bobby Maldonaldo said:

In October DPS officers took part in a firearms training session in a rural area of Onondaga County. As the officers exited the facility and were driving in a DPS pickup truck, two cases holding four unloaded 12 gauge shotguns, similar to waterfowl guns, fell out of the back of the truck. After stopping a few miles later the officers realized this and immediately notified the State Police. An extensive search of the route taken along with a canvasing of houses in the rural area of the incident, however the firearms were not located. This matter remains an open case with State Police and DPS.

The University and DPS takes this matter very seriously. An internal investigation and review was immediately conducted, resulting in disciplinary action imposed on the officer responsible for securing the firearms. In addition, DPS underwent a thorough review of relevant protocols to ensure the firearms transportation and storage procedures and practices are as strong and comprehensive as possible.

Keller says State Police conducted several interviews and the missing shotguns is considered an open investigation. The shotguns' serial numbers were entered into a state database to help identify them if they are recovered.
