South Dakota Self-Defense: Police: Shooting Friday night was self-defense :: 10/26/2016

Police discuss a weekend shooting that was the result of self-defense. A shooting that left a man wounded on Friday night was done in self-defense, Sioux Falls police say.

A 71-year-old man and his wife were sitting in a 2013 Toyota Prius outside the Red Rock Inn on Friday night when another man opened the car door and began punching the man in the head before trying to steal the Prius, police spokesperson Sam Clemens said.

The victim, who is from Bixby, Okla., pulled out his concealed carry handgun and shot the suspect twice, hitting him in the arm and back, Clemens said. The suspect then ran off and was found by police outside a nearby McDonalds after the victim called 911.

The suspect who was shot was identified as Edward James LeBlanc, a 34-year-old man from Bismarck, N.D. He was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries and will be charged with robbery, Clemens said.

The man who shot the suspect had minor injuries and his wife was not hurt. He will not be charged because he legally had the weapon and shot in self-defense, Clemens said.

Although the man is from Oklahoma, he is legally allowed to conceal carry because of reciprocity laws between his home state and South Dakota.
