South Carolina Self-Defense: Greer man shoots son in defense after knife attack :: 06/27/2015

GREER, SC (FOX Carolina) - In Greer, police said a father shot his son in self defense as he was attacked with a knife.

On Thursday night, police and the coroner's office were called to investigate the deadly shooting. The coroner identified the victim as 30-year-old Matthew Davenport.

Police said Kenneth Davenport told police that his son, Matthew Davenport, slashed his face with a knife while trying to get his gun.

"They said a 30-year-old had been killed, and of course I didn't ask any questions," said neighbor Karen Turner.

Turner lives a few doors down from the home on Center Street in Greer where police said a father and son were both taken to the hospital.

The incident report states the son was cursing, yelling and cut his father in the face.

"It really concerned me because you really never think that would happen around you," said Turner.

Police said Kenneth Davenport told them that his son tried getting his gun and after being cut again with the knife, he shot his son. He told police he keeps a gun in his nightstand and that his son broke down the door trying to gain access to the gun.

"I just feel so sad for the family, you know I didn't really know the people but I saw them out in the yard a couple of times," said Turner.

Other neighbors said they didn't even know Kenneth Davenport lived in the home with his son, Matthew Davenport. The police report states after Davenport was shot, he continued to come after his father with a knife so his father fired several more shots before calling for help.

Davenport also told police that his son suffered from mental health issues, and earlier that day the Greenville County Sheriff's office called Kenneth Davenport, asking him to pick up his son.

An autopsy was completed Friday for Matthew Davenport, Greenville County Coroner Parks Evans said. The cause of death was determined to be from a gunshot wound to the chest and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.

At this time, no charges have been filed in connection with the shooting.
