Smart guns may not work fast enough for some, expert says :: 11/04/2015

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) - A growing number of companies are starting to sell smart guns with personalized safety features like fingerprint reading technology.

Many Democratic lawmakers are working to promote the technology, saying it could prevent crimes and accidental deaths.

The CDC said, between 1999 and 2010, 785 kids between the ages of one and 14 years old were killed in gun accidents in the U.S.

The Gun Store owner Bob Irwin said some police officers have holsters available to them with fingerprint technology, but many don’t use them because they can be unreliable.

Irwin said the technology may not work fast enough in a life or death situation if the hand is sweaty, bloody or covered while using a glove.

“There’s all sorts of things that technology doesn’t allow for in the chaos of self-defense,” Irwin said.

There are start up companies making apps to connect guns to smart phones. There’s also smart watches to connect to guns. Irwin worries, though, hackers could interfere, as well.

He said the technology isn’t reliable right now and the guns are more expensive and every second counts when it comes to self-defense.

“Picture every time your computer crashed and it wouldn’t turn on or wouldn’t turn off, or wouldn’t open something. That’s what your guns gonna be. It may not work. Except it’s gonna be way more than annoying if a guy’s coming through your window and the gun doesn’t work,” Irwin said.
