Senate Budget Committee Adopts Amendment to Stop Operation Choke Point Funding :: 03/22/2015

Sen. Mike Crapo proposed the amendment before the Senate Banking Committee on March 19. In addition, a hearing with Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation officials testifying about Operation Choke Point is slated for March 24.

A budget amendment proposed by Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) that would strip the Department of Justice’s Operation Choke Point program of its funding was adopted by the Senate Budget Committee on March 19, according to CQ Roll Call.

“The Department of Justice must not politicize its enforcement policies, and we must not let Operation Choke Point become an end run around the Second Amendment by threatening the financial security of gun and ammunition manufacturers,” Crapo said in an article in The Daily Signal released March 19.

It states Crapo’s proposal is the “strongest effort yet” to end Operation Choke Point.

U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer has also focused on ending Operation Choke Point recently through legislation and requests for investigations into the program by the DOJ and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. He will speak about those efforts at ACA International’s Washington Insights Conference, April 14-16, in Washington, D.C.

Operation Choke Point is an operation in which the FDIC and DOJ have reportedly intimidated financial institutions from offering financial services to certain licensed, legally operating industries the government doesn’t like in an attempt to choke off those industries from our country’s banking system. These include the nondepository lending industry, ammunition and firearms sales, fireworks sales, tobacco sales, coin dealers, debt collectors, pawnbrokers and pharmaceutical sales.

Crapo’s amendment was approved days before FDIC representatives will appear at a March 24 House Financial Services Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee hearing about Operation Choke Point. U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy (R-Wis.) will lead the hearing.

ACA International will continue to follow Crapo’s budget amendment and the hearing next week.
