Sen. Chuck Schumer to push new vote on bill to stop terror suspects from buying guns in wake of San Bernardino shooting :: 12/07/2015

Sen. Chuck Schumer said he'll push for a new vote this week on a bill to stop terror suspects from buying guns.

"If you are on a terrorist watchlist, right now in America, you can purchase a gun - no questions asked," Schumer (D-NY) said. "You can purchase, in most states, one of these assault weapon that kills a lot of people quickly. We need our police to have them. We need our soldiers to have them. We don't need anybody else to have them."

Sen. Chuck Schumer spoke in Bryant Park about how he plans to push for a new vote this week on a bill to stop terror suspects from buying guns.

The bill to close the loophole failed last week by a five-vote margin. Schumer said the close tally might make for a different outcome, now that it's clear the deadly San Bernardino shooting was an act of terrorism.

SENATE VOTES DOWN BILL THAT WOULD KEEP TERROR SUSPECTS FROM BUYING GUNS

"Now that we know it's terrorism, there's no excuse," he said. "The vote to close the terror gap should have passed then, but hopefully we can get it to pass now."

Opponents, backed by the National Rifle Association, have objected that some people are wrongly placed on the terror watchlist.

"We should just make the list tighter and better," Schumer said. "It's never going to be perfect, and we can't let the perfect be the enemy of the good."

Schumer said that local law enforcement needs help from the feds to stop would-be terrorists from legally obtaining guns.

He also noted that people who believe they're on the list mistakenly would have a chance to appeal the denial of a gun.

Schumer spoke at Bryant Park, flanked by heavily armed cops from the NYPD's Hercules teams.

"It is time to move these laws and statutes towards common sense," said deputy police commissioner John Miller, noting there's little local law enforcement can do to keep guns away from would-be terrorists without the feds' help.

"New York City, New York State has some of the toughest gun laws in the country, but the guns that are used in crimes here, guns that would be obtained by terrorists, are generally obtained out of state," he said

Gov. Cuomo backed the new push Sunday. "As if it weren't common-sense enough, it is clearer now than ever that members of Congress can no longer sit on their hands and shirk their responsibility to protect the American people - they must close the terror gap," he said.

"This loophole does nothing more than help radical people kill innocent Americans, and it must be closed. The fact that reform continues to languish illustrates the stranglehold the NRA has over Washington, and it's time for our elected leaders to show the political courage to vote for the safety of the American people."
