Resident hears pounding at front door and arms himself. Then man allegedly charges at him -- big mistake. :: 10/26/2016

The resident of a house in Spokane Valley, Washington, told police he heard pounding on the front door and side of the home Sunday night — so he armed himself before heading outside, the Spokesman-Review reported.

The resident, who served as an Army reservist in Iraq, KLXY-TV reported, noticed a man in the yard and ordered him to leave. Several times.

Nothing doing, apparently.

Instead the man charged right at the resident, police said — so the resident fired at him.

The wounded man then ran off, but police later found him still alive near the house’s back porch, KLXY said.

“The deputies continually tried to calm him down and they were able to detain him and get medics in there, but the male continued to be uncooperative,” Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Gregory told the station.

The man — identified as Nakia Shane Burland, 42 — was hit in the femoral artery, lost a lot of blood and died at the scene, police told KLXY.

The man who shot him has been cooperating with detectives and hasn’t been charged, the station said.

"This part of Montgomery where the house is located is waterfront property. Residents have the Spokane River and Centennial Trail right in their backyards. In the past, thieves have used the trail to access the neighborhood and steal things, and that might be what’s behind Sunday night’s shooting."
