Rep. Amash: GOP-Run House Voting to Ban Gun Ownership for Pre-Crime :: 07/06/2016

Breitbart News reported on June 30 that House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) blinked days after a Democrat-sponsored sit-in, announcing he would allow a gun control vote this week.

Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) on May, 25, 2011 in Washington, DC.

Representative Justin Amash (R-Mich-3rd), however, has issued a warning about HR 5611.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA-23) sponsored the legislation and framed it in the language of fighting terrorism.

During the Fourth of July weekend, Amash used Twitter to issue his warning about HR 5611:

#HR5611 specifically targets people who are not terrorists. Designed to restrict gun rights of Americans who cannot be charged w/ terrorism.

— Justin Amash (@justinamash) July 4, 2016

Amash added:

#HR5611 allows govt to infringe your gun rights w/o charge, trial, or conviction—based merely on prediction you'll someday be a terrorist.

— Justin Amash (@justinamash) July 5, 2016

He made clear that the basis for losing gun rights will be “pre-crime,” rather than crime, which equates to losing rights for an accusation or suspicion, rather than a conviction.

He tweeted:

1/ If #HR5611 (vote this week) becomes law, it will mark a massive expansion of govt's restriction of gun rights on the basis of precrime.

— Justin Amash (@justinamash) July 4, 2016

On June 29, Breitbart News reported that Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was overjoyed that Democrats have sucked many Republicans into the pro-gun control column by simply using the language of terrorism in their bills. The New York Times quoted Schumer saying Republicans face “greater pressure” because “terrorism has become intertwined with the gun issue.”

Representative Amash is warning that Americans who are not terrorists–and cannot be charged with terrorism–face a loss of constitutional rights if HR 5611 is enacted.
