Pew releases new poll on gun control, claims both parties want to increase gun control :: 08/17/2015

Pew Research released a new study on Thursday claiming that a majority of Americans in both parties support increasing gun control measures.

According to the study, 85 percent of Americans favor expanded background checks, 79 percent favor laws to prevent people with mental illness from purchasing guns, 70 percent back the creation of a federal database to track all gun sales, and a smaller majority, 57 percent, support a ban on assault-style weapons.

The only measure that a majority of Republicans are opposed to is a ban on assault weapons ban which 48 percent support.

When asked whether it is more important to protect gun rights or control firearms, 47 percent of respondents supported Second Amendment rights while 50 percent think it was better curb gun ownership.

The demographic that was the most supportive gun rights were white Republican men who lived in a rural area, the least supportive were minority Democratic women that reside in an urban city.

Despite being in favor of additional gun control, the study did find that 54 percent of respondents believed that owning a firearm reduced you’re likelihood of being a victim of a crime.

Even though the public supports some levels of gun control, they have also moved in support of gun rights substantially since 2000 when only 29 percent supported Second Amendment rights.
