Pennsylvania Self-Defense: 'I got a gun:' A 78-year-old woman's 911 call lands Pitt student homicide suspect Matthew Darby in jail :: 10/14/2017

Pittsburgh, PA — A 78-year-old woman looking out her window called police to report a suspicious man. Police said that man turned out to be Matthew Darby -- a suspect in the death of Pitt student Alina Sheykhet.

The elderly woman in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, told the 911 call taker that she planned to defend herself.

"He's messing around with me, and I got a gun, and if I have to, I'm going to shoot to kill him," the woman is heard saying on a recording of the 911 call.

The woman, who police have not publicly identified, told the call taker that she didn't recognize the man outside her home.

"I got up to go to the bathroom, and I looked out, and he came from in the back, and he came over to fix and try to get in a window," she said. "He was fooling with the window, then he came over here and was looking in my window," she said.

The caller appeared to watch the man outside her window closely.

"He's got on some shorts that look like the flag," the woman said.

"Like the American flag?" the call taker asked.

"Uh huh," the woman said. "He's got a backpack."

Minutes later, police knocked on the woman's door and the 911 call ended.

When Myrtle Beach police arrived, they said they realized their suspect was wanted for murder in Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh police charged Darby, 21, with killing his former girlfriend, Sheykhet, 20, who was found dead at her off-campus apartment in Oakland on Sunday morning.

Darby remains in custody in South Carolina. He has waived extradition and is awaiting his return to Pittsburgh, where he will face a homicide charge.
