Pennsylvania Self-Defense: Victims of violent home invasion in Oley tell their story :: 11/20/2015

An Oley Township couple spoke out Wednesday after a horrific home invasion ended in gunfire early Tuesday morning.

Jennifer and Eric Wegman told 69 News they're lucky to be alive after three intruders broke into their quiet home on Mill Road around 1 a.m.

The couple had just moved into the house with their 11-month-old baby days earlier.

"I heard a loud bang, which I believe was them busting the door open," said Jennifer, who was lying awake beside her sleeping husband at the time.

"I woke up to the sound of someone yelling. I think they said 'freeze' or something quick like that, and there was someone standing there," Eric said. "I could see that he was pointing a gun."

Without hesitation, Eric reached for his own weapon from a nightstand and exchanged shots.

"He took off, ran down the steps. I followed and someone at the bottom pointed his gun towards me, so I fired again and I hit him. I hit 'em both and he dropped the gun and bolted out the door," Eric recalled.

Although he doesn't even remember it happening, Eric was also shot in the leg. He was treated and released that same day.

Edward Martinez - Erick Green - Brandon Smith

All three suspects and an alleged accomplice are in custody. Edward Martinez, Brandon Smith, Erik Green and Cheyene Tavarez went to the home with the intention of robbing the previous tenants, authorities said.

"It's just frustrating. It was undeserved. We did nothing to anybody, and now we're having to deal with the consequences," said Jennifer. "I feel so violated."

The family is staying with relatives until the crime scene is clear and the home is cleaned. They expect to move back in this week.

The couple is relieved to be alive and grateful for Eric's fast thinking. The suspects didn't manage to steal anything from the home.

Jennifer told 69 News that the couple has received an outpouring of support from friends, family and community members.

"Lucky, you feel lucky," the Wegmans said.
