PA House and Senate - 2015 - 2016 - Republican Leadership Election Results :: 11/12/2014

PA Senate

Corman Defeats Pileggi for Majority Leader Post

The Senate Republicans won the election but are going with new leadership.

Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R-Delaware) was defeated in caucus elections today by Centre County Senator Jake Corman.

Corman announced his challenge last week and some GOP Senators have been publicly calling for Pileggi to be replaced since September.

The insurgent won across the board today with Senator Joe Scarnati remaining Senate Pro Tempore.

Among the other new officeholders include: Pat Browne (R-Lehigh) as the new Senate Appropriations Chairman; Sen. John Gordner of Columbia will be the new Majority Whip; Montgomery County Sen. Bob Mensch is set to be become Caucus Chair; and Sen. Rich Alloway (R-Franklin) will be Caucus Secretary.

Ironically, the victory Republicans won last Tuesday contributed to Pileggi’s defeat.

New conservative members from western PA were unhappy with the SEPA native, feeling he has been too moderate and close to labor unions.

The ascension of Corman represents a major shift in the caucus towards the more conservative faction of the Republican Party ahead of the Wolf Administration.

PA House of Representatives

Turzai New Speaker; Reed to Become Majority Leader

The House Republicans have finished their leadership elections and the votes are in.

Surprising no one, Mike Turzai was elected the new Speaker of the House.

The Allegheny County Republican is currently the House Majority Leader and was unopposed in his race for Speaker.

The battle for Majority Leader, however, pitted House Majority Whip Stan Saylor (R-York) against House Policy Chair Dave Reed (R-Indiana).

Rep. Reed ended up pulling out the win and will be the new House Majority Leader come January.

Rep. Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster) was elected House Majority Whip over Rep. Mike Vereb (R-Montco).

In other news, House Appropriations Chairman Bill Adolph of Delaware County was re-elected. Also, Chair of the Republican caucus, Susquehanna Rep. Sandra Major won unopposed.
