Oregon Self-Defense: Portland Homeowner Confronts Intruder With Lengthy Criminal History :: 07/16/2016

A homeless man who broke into a Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood home in Portland, Oregon was shot dead after being discovered by the homeowner.

Officers were dispatched to the home shortly before 1 a.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2016 after receiving a call about a robbery and learned of the shooting while en route.

At the scene, police discovered 30-year-old Anthony Lazarides dead inside the residence.

Lazarides has an extensive criminal history, according to court documents. Since 2004, he has been convicted of assault, reckless driving, and possession and delivery of marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin.

Police believe Lazarides was homeless, but “appears to have a strong history” in the area said Sgt. Pete Simpson, a Portland police spokesman, via email.

“The neighborhood is a mix neighborhood, like most neighborhoods we have good and bad,” neighbor Connie Dubanski said.

Another neighbor told reporters the homeowner who shot the suspect had somebody break into his truck and rifle through it just a few months ago.

The 45-year-old homeowner was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and is cooperating with police.

Police said the home invasion may have involved more than just Lazarides and are asking anyone who has information on the case, and who has not had the chance to speak with police yet, to call 503.823.0400.
