Oklahoma Self-Defense: Yukon homeowner holds burglary suspect at gunpoint until police arrive :: 07/30/2018

YUKON — A Texas man was arrested Friday afternoon after a Yukon homeowner reportedly caught him trying to burglarize his home and almost accidentally shot him.

Oklahoma City police arrived at the home about 1:10 p.m. to find the homeowner holding Jared Kevin Bennett, 44, of Perryton, Texas, at gunpoint in his driveway in the 4000 block of Stonebridge Circle.

Bennett was arrested on a burglary complaint.

The man told police he was working in his home office before 1 p.m. when he heard an open door chime from his security system, according to a police report.

Thinking the wind might have blown the door to the garage open, he closed it and went back to work.

The chime went off again shortly after, and when he went to close the same door, the man saw the door handle twist. He locked the door and ran to grab his gun, according to the report.

He returned and opened the door to reach in and open the garage door, hoping to scare off whomever was inside.

The man stepped into the garage and saw Bennett run through the garage's back door to the backyard, police reported. He caught Bennett in the backyard and ordered him to the ground at gunpoint, according to the report.

He made Bennett belly-crawl to the driveway, but he didn't have a cell phone to call police, according to the report.

Bennett started to rise up on his hands, and the man accidentally fired his gun once into the grass away from Bennett, according to the report.

Bennett quickly laid back down and did not move, according to the report.

The man yelled for help until a neighbor came outside and called 911.

Police found a makeshift burglar's mask around Bennett's neck, binoculars by the backyard fence and gray gloves, according to the report.

Bennett was booked into the Oklahoma County jail. He remained there Monday and is being held for the Canadian County Sheriff's Office.
