Ohio State student shot dead near campus :: 01/06/2017

Tarak Andrew Underiner wanted OH college students to have the right to carry guns on campus so they could defend themselves in risky situations - say, leaving the library late at night and traveling home alone.

WSYX, Columbus' ABC affiliate, reported that officers responded to 28 E. Northwood Avenue around 12:30 a.m after someone called 911 saying a friend was shot. Underiner was pronounced dead before 1 a.m.

A person inside the building reported the shooting and stated that someone ran out the door after multiple shots were fired.

"College campuses and the areas surrounding them present environments rich with potential victims", Tarak Underiner, an Ohio State student and member of university's chapter of Students for Concealed Carry, told a Senate committee. It's the first homicide in Columbus this year.

Detectives don't believe the shooting was random. Underiner argued that expanding concealed carry to public college campuses was important for self-defense. "They're willing to gamble we're unarmed and it pays off".

Underiner, the treasurer of Buckeyes for Concealed Carry, testified in November before the Legislature in favor of concealed-carry legislation that would automatically cover campuses, rather than the "opt in" bill that later passed (and Ohio State ignored). The victim's two roommates were questioned but weren't immediately considered suspects.
