Ohio Self-Defense: One suspect still at large in deadly Akron home invasion :: 08/08/2015

AKRON, Ohio -- Police are searching for the second suspect in a home invasion that took place in the 1500 block of Hilbish Avenue just after 2 p.m. Friday afternoon.

Neighbors tell Channel 3 News they heard three shots coming from the house. They said they then saw a tall man running out of the house, headed for the woods.

Investigators said an occupant at the home shot the suspect's partner dead in what appeared to be an act of self defense. Police said the homeowner, identified as David Hillis, grabbed a gun and shot one of the suspects.

The suspect's body was found outside the home. His identity was not immediately available.

From the outside, you don't see any signs of forced entry; no broken-in windows, no busted-out door.

Sources said the attempted break-in may have been drug related. No charges have been filed.

Hillis's father, a former Summit County deputy, showed up to and tried to get closer to the scene. Police say he ignored them trying to get past, which is why he was subsequently arrested for misconduct at an emergency, disorderly conduct and failure to follow the order of a traffic officer.

A handful of other people were inside the home and possibly witness it. None of them were children.

The motive for the break-in and attack is not clear.
