Obama Failed to Strip Americans of Their Second Amendment Rights :: 12/20/2016

As President Obama’s second term comes to a close, he has had to address the country 16 times in regards to a mass shooting. Each time he has shared words of sympathy and condolence to loved ones. And each time he has pushed gun control in order to trample on Americans’ Second Amendment rights.

However, during Obama’s time in the White House, he has made little federal progress towards the “common-sense” gun laws that he desires.

The founders codified many of our God-given rights and put the Second Amendment in place for self-preservation and to ensure a tyrannical government does not take hold in America. Many times the shootings could have been less tragic if a good guy were armed, but unfortunately many of the shootings took place in “gun-free zones,” which strips law-abiding Americans of key defense tools, while criminals disobey the laws.

Even the mainstream media outlet, ABC News reported that the Obama administration has made little progress on gun laws and stated that Obama’s speeches have had the opposite effect, “Not only has he been unable to pass federal gun legislation … but his presidency has seen gun sales hit record highs.” Most Americans saw through the Obama administration’s strategy to prevent law-abiding citizens from purchasing firearms, hence the sales skyrocketed. Many Americans, gun makers, and gun stores stocked up in reaction to Obama’s attempts at gun control legislation. According to the ABC News article, sales hit a record high:

According to the adjusted NSSF data, there were 847,808 guns purchased during the month that Obama was sworn in for his first term in 2009, compared with 655,143 guns sold that month the previous year. Fast-forward four years to January 2013, and gun purchases for the month were recorded at 1,790,154.

But that wasn’t the highest-selling month for guns. December 2012, saw 2,237,731 gun sales across America, according to NSSF data. While gun sales are typically strong during the holiday shopping season, this uptick was also likely a reaction to the Sandy Hook shooting and possible new legislation.

President Obama signed 23 executive actions in January 2013 that are still in effect today. But major changes were prevented by the Senate, who blocked universal background checks for firearm sales from being passed. Some states have passed more gun control laws, but others have relaxed their laws, including Texas which passed concealed carry on college campuses. Fortunately, for Second Amendment fans, gun control advocates have been disappointed by what the Obama administration has failed to “achieve.” As his presidency comes to a close, we must have a strong push for the federal government to undo Obama’s gun control initiatives and to shift the responsibility for local policing away from the federal government and back to the local level. Local communities must be accountable for their own policing, and states need to undo anything that infringes on  our right to keep and bear arms.
