Movie Shoot Confuses Police after Deadly Shooting :: 07/22/2014

CARRICK, PA (KDKA) One man is dead, another is in critical condition after a shooting in Carrick early Tuesday morning.  According to police, the incident around 2:30 a.m. inside an apartment on Merritt Avenue.

Police say they ran into a little confusion at the crime scene due to the filming of the movie “Southpaw” in Carrick. While filming in area the production crew turned Merritt Avenue into “Brady Avenue” for the movie.

Police spokeswoman Sonya Toler said two men broke into a second-floor apartment and were shot by the resident.  The resident used a shotgun in his bedroom after the two men shot through his front door and broke into the apartment.  David Calhoun, 31, was pronounced dead inside the apartment, while Christopher Thomas, 27, of Marshall-Shadeland, was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital in critical condition.

The 19-year-old resident, who shot the two suspects, lives in the apartment with his 17-year-old girlfriend.  He was taken away in handcuffs for questioning at Pittsburgh Police headquarters on the North Side. However, Toler said no charges would be filed against the resident.  "He’s one of those laid back, chill, hippie kids. He loves everybody, I’ve never seen the kid raise his voice, let alone fire a gun," Michael Ferita, a neighbor, said.

A third person involved in the home-invasion is believed to have sped away from the scene in a black truck. That truck was later found and the driver was taken into custody.  "Southpaw" stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, and 50 Cent. The movie has been filming in the Pittsburgh area for the past couple months.

Lesson learned. Don’t smash in the door of a guy who has a shotgun. The results are predictable.
