More Obama commutations: Hypocrisy on gun laws :: 10/17/2016

President Obama — that crusader for gun control — was at his hypocritical best last week when he commuted the sentences of 15 federal inmates convicted of crimes involving firearms.

Those inmates were among 102 granted commutations for mostly drug-related crimes in the latest round of the president's free-wheeling clemency program, which to date has commuted 774 sentences, 590 in this year alone, according to The Washington Times.

Every time commutations are announced, the list of those who received a get-out-of-jail-free card includes some percentage of inmates serving time for gun crimes — either using a weapon during a drug transaction or possessing a gun illegally as a convicted felon.

This comes from a president who this year rolled out initiatives that he said were designed to “prevent guns from falling into the wrong hands.” The problem is his gun controls focus more on law-abiding citizens exercising their constitutional right — not on thugs who have used guns illegally and shouldn't be given an opportunity to do so again.

If, in fact, the issue is excessive mandatory minimum sentences, then address that. “Only the passage of legislation can achieve the broader reforms needed to ensure our federal sentencing system operates more fairly and effectively in the service of public safety,” said White House counsel Neil Eggleston.

The problem must be addressed at the front end of the criminal justice system, not at the back end.
