Missouri Self-Defense: Home invasion suspect critically injured :: 04/01/2016

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched Thursday night to the 20,000 block of Route AA for a home invasion where a person had been shot.

Washington County Sheriff’s Department Captain Zach Jacobsen said he was the first deputy on scene and was actually out for another call. When he arrived at the house, he secured the scene. The owner was injured and requesting an ambulance.

"He was having some cardiac issues, was short of breath and had some abrasions and bruising," Jacobsen said.

The homeowner was taken by Washington County Ambulance to Washington County Memorial Hospital.

At the same time he arrived at the house, Potosi Police was being dispatched to a residence for a victim of a gunshot wound. The victim was believed to be the suspect in the home invasion.

“We are on scene right now processing the scene,” said Jacobsen at about 10 p.m. Thursday. “The gunshot victim suspect of the home invasion was flown to Mercy Creve Coeur with a gunshot wound to the abdomen and is in critical condition. Both the victim and the suspect are white males and I don’t have their ages right now.”

“All indications show two suspects arrived at the residence and the homeowner appeared through the open door and saw people,” said Jacobsen. “He recognized one, but the other subject was wearing a mask and they came into the residence demanding medication. A struggle ensued and the homeowner/victim is on oxygen full time and he was hooked to an oxygen tank.”“That’s when they called 911,” said Jacobsen. “The second suspect, also a white male, is in custody and is at the sheriff’s office being interviewed. I don’t know that charges will be filed in the morning because the extent of the injuries on the suspect being flown to St. Louis are pretty extensive. There are no injuries that I am aware of with the second suspect who is in custody. I would venture to say that it will be likely there will be charges filed in the morning on the second suspect who is in custody uninjured.”The Daily Journal will bring more details as they become available.

Jacobsen said they believe this is a self-defense act by the homeowner at this point. They are still processing the scene and determining what happened.

Jacobsen said they threw the homeowner onto the couch and at that point he was able to retrieve a weapon that he had and shot the one man. He fired one shot striking him in the abdomen. At that point both suspects of the home invasion fled out of the residence and into a vehicle in the driveway and went to Coleman Street in Potosi in the city limits.

Jacobsen said they are known to each other and the sheriff’s department believes this to be a robbery attempt for narcotics. Jacobsen added they do not believe that the homeowner is dealing narcotics. The man is an older gentleman who uses prescription medications and that is what they came for.
