Mississippi Self-Defense: Kidnapped and robbed, victim fatally shoots attacker :: 05/20/2015

A kidnapping and armed robbery early Saturday morning in Jackson, Mississippi, left one suspect dead and another on the run after the victim fought back.

Around 6:30 a.m., the man was putting items into his truck, which was parked in his driveway, when he was approached by two men who were armed with guns. The suspects instructed the man to go into his house to retrieve his wallet, then forced the man back into his own truck to drive to an ATM to get more cash for the suspects.

The man did as instructed, but after withdrawing the money, the suspects had the man drive to an area near his home. Local media reported the suspects indicated they were going to leave the man at that location and return to the man’s home to harm his wife.

It was at that point, the man turned the tables on the suspects, who were unaware the man had a handgun in his truck. The man grabbed his gun and fired several rounds, striking one of the suspects, and sending the second fleeing from the scene.

One neighbor, who did not wish to be identified, told reporters that when she was letting her dogs outside that morning, she heard six gunshots, followed by several more.

It’s unknown how many shots were fired by the victim or whether the suspects returned fire.

The neighbor said after the gunshots, she saw people standing near a truck and a body on the ground.

Responding officers found one suspect lying in a grassy area next to the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified by the Hinds County coroner as 23-year-old Edwin Robinson.

The second suspect is still at large and is described as a black male, about 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, wearing a dark colored shirt and a bandanna. He was seen fleeing in a tan SUV with no tags. Authorities said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

The name of the victim has not been released, but neighbors told reporters he is a doctor and is doing okay.

Authorities said the shooting appears to be a case of justifiable homicide.
