Michigan Self-Defense: Woman who shot 5 burglars: 'Protect what's yours' :: 06/12/2015

Detroit — A 34-year-old woman who opened fire on five home invaders was recovering Wednesday from a gunshot wound to her leg as Detroit Police investigated the incident.

Police are unsure if any of the four bullets Dietta Gueye fired hit the burglars, so they're monitoring hospital emergency rooms to see if anyone shows up with unexplained gunshot wounds, a department spokeswoman said.

Meanwhile, Gueye said she's relaxing at home, still amped up from the previous day's events.

"I'm pretty sore right now," Gueye said Wednesday, a day after five men crawled through the front windows of her east side home, only to scatter after she opened fire at them with the 9mm Glock she keeps by her bedside.

"Yesterday was pretty chaotic, so I'm just chilling today," Gueye said.

Gueye said she was asleep in her home in the 12400 block of Whitehill when she heard a tap at her window at 2:37 a.m. A second tap was followed by the sound of glass shattering. When she pulled back her blinds, she saw an armed man standing outside her window.

As the man and his four companions broke out the two windows and crawled into her bedroom, Gueye said she fired off four shots, sending the men scrambling — although one of the men fired a single shot, hitting her in the right leg, before fleeing.

Gueye was taken to St. John Hospital and released hours later.

The only bullet hole found was from the shot that struck Gueye, she said.

"The investigators recovered several shell casings from the home," Detroit Police Officer Nicole Kirkwood said. "But it's unknown whether any of the suspects were hit."

Kirkwood said police are watching for anyone showing up to the hospital seeking medical treatment for gunshot wounds.

Gueye's neighborhood is a high-crime area. This year on her street, which only runs 11/2 miles from Moross to Outer Drive, there have been seven aggravated assaults that include three shootings; four burglaries; and seven stolen vehicles, according to Detroit Police crime data.

Gueye, who owns a tax service and retail shop, said she hopes her experience can convince others to avoid being victims.

"I'm trying to turn this into a positive," she said. "My main thing I want people to remember is, don't be afraid to protect what's yours. When you're out here trying to do right, be a good person, own a business, and be all about family, and someone tries to take all that, you have the right to protect yourself."
