Michigan Self-Defense: Gas station attacker had been acting suspicious at another business :: 12/09/2019

A man who allegedly attacked a gas station attendant in Macomb Township before he was shot several times had earlier been questioned about suspicious behavior at another area business, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.

The 30-year-old Shelby Township man remained hospitalized under police guard Monday with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was shot after attacking an employee with a glass bottle at a Mobil gas station on Hall Road at Heydenreich about 8:10 p.m. on Saturday.

Prior to the shooting, he had gone into another business on Hall Road, where employees called the sheriff's office about him.

When deputies arrived, "the suspect was located and had not committed any criminal actions," Sgt. Renee Yax said in a news release. "He was told to the leave the business and complied."

A short time later, the same individual walked into the gas station, where he immediately began advancing towards the two clerks working behind the counter.

One of the employees on Sunday told The Macomb Daily the man "said he wanted to kill me" before a skirmish broke out in the gas station.

The alleged attacker grabbed a liquor bottle and began to assault the clerks with it, Yax said.

That's when one of the employees shot the suspect. The employee, a 28-year-old Macomb Township man, holds a valid concealed pistol license, according to the sheriff's office.

The second clerk is a 34-year-old Macomb Township man. One of the employees then called 911.

The suspect remains hospitalized in stable condition with gunshot wounds to his abdomen, neck, left chest, right armpit and a graze to his head.

Yax said the 28-year-old gas station employee was also transported to the hospital for his injuries and has been released. The 34-year-old clerk was treated on scene.

Deputies say there is no known relationship between the suspect and the employees.

Deputies have confiscated the employee's gun as the investigation is continuing. It is not yet known whether the weapon will be released to him, Yax said.
