Farmington Hills — A 24-year-old Detroit man is dead after being shot by his mother early Wednesday morning after he allegedly tried to break into her apartment.
According to Lt. Jeff King, the incident occurred at about 1:40 a.m. when police received a report of shots fired at the Independence Green apartment complex, located near Halsted and Grand River.
Police and personnel from the Farmington Hills Fire Department responded to the apartment on the 37000 block of Eisenhower at Independence Green.
“Once they were there, they found a 24-year-old man who had been shot. He was transported to Beaumont Hospital Farmington Hills, where he was pronounced dead,” King said.
Police Chief Charles Nebus said the 42-year-old woman — who made the 911 call that a shooting had occurred — told police that her son had tried to force his way into the apartment with a "piece of concrete" in his hand and that she had shot him to defend herself and others who were in the apartment.
"There were two female adults and two infants in the house, and she said she was concerned for everyone's safety," Nebus said. "She came in voluntarily and cooperated, claiming she shot him in self defense. She was quite upset and during the interview, broke down when she was informed he had died at the hospital.
"We took a statement from her, and she was released pending a review by the prosecutor's office," Nebus said.
Nebus said police have had a history of runs to the apartment over arguments between the woman and her son, including one at 8:47 p.m. Tuesday night — a few hours before the fatal shooting. None had resulted in criminal charges.
"Officers went to the address on a domestic call on Tuesday night and all parties agreed the matter was resolved and he (son) left without further incident," said Nebus. "There was no report of an assault or injury."
Nebus said there was evidence of forced entry on the apartment door and the piece of concrete had been recovered. There was one shot fired from the handgun, which is registered to the woman who has a concealed pistol permit to carry. The son also has a CPL, Nebus said, but he was unarmed.
The cause of the argument was not revealed, Nebus said.
The son has a prior domestic assault case against him several years ago that was dismissed, police said.
An autopsy is to be done by the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office and his identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin, Nebus said.
