Michigan Self-Defense Shooting: Detroit resident fatally shoots suspected intruder in backyard :: 10/01/2014

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - A southwest Detroit resident  fatally shot an intruder trying to break into his house on the 8400 block of Whitaker Monday.

The married father of four spotted the suspect attacking his dog in the backyard and when the intruder approached the window the homeowner shot him.

Neighbor Hilal Alkateeb, who lives in neighborhood, said that the resident is "a real nice guy" who has never believed in violence.

Alkateeb acted as his translator when the resident gave Detroit police the play by play.

"He woke up to use the bathroom and he heard some rattling in the back," Alkateeb said. "When he looked out back he saw the guy trying to choke out the dog when the guy made eye contact with him he approached the window when he approached the window he shot him."

The suspect died from his injuries in the man's backyard.

According to neighbors there have been several break-ins in the area, including at least three that they know.

The homeowner had just got the dog from the Taylor Animal Shelter on Saturday for extra security when this happened.

"There is a push to protect property," said Deputy Chief Renee Hall of the Detroit Police Department. "However in order to protect property and use deadly force there has to be an imminent threat to the safety of a life whether yours, a family member or someone else."

Whether that's the case will be up to the Wayne County Prosecutor's office, which will decide what if any charges will be filed.

Those who know the homeowner are standing by him.

"He broke into their property,"  Alkatteeb said. "Anyone in their right mind would defend their house their property, their family, their kids."
