Mayor Peduto Challenges DA Zappala To 'Arrest Me' Over Proposed Gun Regulations :: 01/22/2019

PITTSBURGH (Newsradio 1020 KDKA) – Controversy is escalating over proposed gun control legislation for the City of Pittsburgh.

The D.A says any gun legislation passed by council could be a crime

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala recently wrote city council saying they don’t have the authority to pass a gun law and could put themselves at legal risk by doing so.

Asked about that letter today, Mayor Bill Peduto Shot back, “Arrest me. You know what; I welcome him trying to put up a lawsuit that would arrest me if I sign this legislation. I would welcome that.”

Peduto said meaningful change from local officials challenging the justice of laws and as for Zappala saying that city council could put themselves in legal jeopardy.

“Anybody who would threaten a legislature of any body, city council, state rep, Congress member that would will be arrested if you don’t vote a certain way, what country do we live in?”

A statement from a Zappala spokesman says, "The statements from the city do not accurately reflect the content of the letter that the District Attorney communicated to council. The letter had no relation to politics or policy. It is about process and legality."

Council’s Thursday evening public hearing on the gun legislation will likely be held in the lobby of the City-County Building, not council chambers because so many people are expected to attend.
