Maryland Self-Defense: Towson store clerk shoots, kills robber, police say :: 12/09/2015

TOWSON, Md. —A 68-year-old liquor store clerk shot and killed a robber Monday night in Towson, police said. Two men entered Towson Wine & Spirits in the unit block of Pennsylvania Avenue around 7 p.m., according to Baltimore County police.

Towson robbery shooting

Investigators said one of the robbers, identified by police Tuesday as Claude Edward Mayo, 25, of Baltimore, aimed a handgun at the clerk's head, at which time the clerk got his own handgun and shot Mayo multiple times.

"One of the men pointed his gun at the clerk. That clerk pulled his own gun and shot the man several times. Both suspects then fled the store. The first suspect collapsed outside the store and was declared deceased at the scene. The second suspect fled on foot," Baltimore County police Cpl. John Wachter said.

Police said someone had to see something when the second suspect ran away. They're searching for him and said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

"In this case, the suspect that is out there, we know he was armed. We did not recover his gun, so he's still got it," Wachter said.

Police said the store clerk's handgun was legally purchased and registered to him. The handgun used by the deceased suspect did not show as being reported stolen. The gun is an older model and detectives continue to investigate.

Mayo has a previous conviction for armed robbery and armed carjacking. He had been out on probation but had a hearing scheduled in the spring for a violation.

Police said there were two clerks inside the store at the time of the incident. Police said once the investigation is complete, they will consult with the State's Attorney's Office to determine whether any charges will be filed.

Tony Yan, who owns a nearby business, said he's going to be more cautious.

"I'm kind of shocked, because, you know, I'm across the street, and it could have happened anywhere, this type of thing," Yan said. "Just beware, watch what's going on outside, because my business has a lot of windows outside. I can see something happen and I can react a little bit more."

People who work and shop in the area have strong opinions about what happened to Mayo.

"There are certain consequences to robbing a store, and sorry, it happens," said Rob Coyle.

"He got what was coming to him. He pulled a gun. The guy, luckily, was able to defend himself. I don't see any problem with that," said Bill Voelker.

"These people who choose to go and carry a gun into a store and try to rob it, they don't know what they're going to be up against. They don't know whether the person is armed or not, and in this case, they had a wrong gamble," Wachter said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police at 410-307-2020, or Metro Crime Stoppers at 866-7LOCKUP.

The shop reopened Tuesday.
