Maryland Self-Defense: Lothian homeowner shoots alleged intruder :: 02/03/2017

LOTHIAN, Md. - An intruder who broke into a Lothian home was shot by the homeowner, Anne Arundel County police said.

Police were called around 8 a.m. Thursday to the area of Mullen Lane and Old Ridge Path Lane, where they found a man who was shot.

The man came into the home and was confronted by two homeowners, before the homeowner shot at the man twice, police said. Police said the intruder put up quite a fight even after being shot the first time.

WBAL-TV 11 News learned that the homeowner is a retired FBI employee who is a prominent local businessman.

"It's the last thing you'd expect at eight o'clock in the morning is somebody to be barging into your home, forcing you into a situation where you have to protect yourself," Anne Arundel County police spokesman Mark Limansky said.

The man was confronted right away by the homeowners, first the wife, then her husband, who tried to get the man to leave.

"He resisted, at which time the male homeowner shot the individual. That didn't do the trick, and the individual obtained a piece of metal and came at the homeowner a second time, who then shot him in the head with his handgun," Limansky said.

After being shot in the leg and the head, police said the intruder managed to run about 300 yards down the street before collapsing in a neighbor's yard.

"He defended his home. Apparently, the person broke into the home and was threatening, and he was able to defend himself," neighbor David Lane said. "I'm glad that my neighbor's OK."

While police said the homeowners did not know the man, he is known to police for suspicious activity and other attempted break-ins in the area for at least the last month.

Police said the man, who has not been identified, was airlifted to Shock Trauma for treatment. He is expected to survive. Police said they have obtained a warrant for the man and he will be arrested and charged once he is released from the hospital.

Authorities said they are investigating the shooting as self-defense.
