Louisiana Self-Defense: NOPD: Man shoots alleged robber in Uptown carjacking Sunday; four other robberies reported overnight in New Orleans :: 12/11/2017
The New Orleans Police Department reported five robberies between Saturday evening and early Sunday morning, according to a preliminary offense log.
The string of incidents included an armed robbery with five victims and two carjackings.
The first incident, a simple robbery, happened in the 2600 block of Josephine Street, in Central City, shortly before 7:30 p.m., police said.
NOPD said the robbery was preceded by a fight between the victim, a 39-year-old woman, and another woman who goes by the name of "Jeanette." Later, Jeanette and another woman spotted the victim and held her hands up, taking a cell phone, a credit card and two Parenthood cards from her pocket, police said.
In the next incident, three women and two men were robbed at gunpoint about 10:40 p.m. in the Carrollton area of Uptown, at Burthe and Hillary streets, according to New Orleans police.
Police said the victims were walking in the 900 block of Hillary Street when they were approached by two men, one of whom produced a silver gun and demanded money. One of the men gave his wallet and one of the women gave her purse to the robbers before they fled, NOPD said.
The victims in that robbery were all 19 and 20 years old. Tulane police identified all five victims as students. According to university police, the alleged robbers took property from three students before fleeing westbound on Burthe Street toward Adams Street.
Five Tulane University students were robbed at gunpoint in an off-campus incident on Saturday night, according to officials.
Early Sunday morning, NOPD also reported two carjackings.
The first happened downtown on O'Keefe Avenue and Gravier Street about 1:20 a.m., when a 24-year-old man was driving his car and was approached by three other men, police said.
One of the subjects produced a gun and demanded money from the victim. When he said he didn't have any, they then forced themselves into the victim's vehicle and struck him in the head with a bottle, police said.
The victim then jumped out of the vehicle and the subjects fled in the car. The man was taken to the hospital and his condition is unknown at this time, according to NOPD.
The second carjacking happened Uptown about 1:45 a.m. in the 1000 block of Milan Street, police said.
NOPD said in that incident, the victims, two men ages 57 and 62, drove back to their house, got out of their car and were approached by two men wearing masks and dark clothing.
One of the subjects told the 57-year-old victim to put his hands on the vehicle and the other shoved the 62-year-old to the ground, demanding the car. The second victim then pulled out a handgun and fired it toward one of the subjects, striking him in the abdomen, police said.
The first victim heard the shots and fled on foot to the Second District Police Station to notify authorities, police said, while one of the subjects fled in the victim's silver Infinity.
The other robber, who was shot, fled on foot and as of Sunday morning was still at large, according to NOPD.
Finally, a simple robbery was reported in the 100 block of Chartres Street, in the French Quarter, about 4 a.m.
Police said in that incident, the victim, a 29-year-old man, got into a car with a man and woman and went to a gas station.
The man asked to see the victim's watch, so the victim asked him for his car keys in return. The man then punched the victim and took his keys and the victim's watch before fleeing with the woman, police said.
