Louisiana Self-Defense: Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office won't file charges against Harvey woman who shot her boyfriend :: 07/08/2015

A New Orleans man was shot by his girlfriend in self-defense after he strangled and beat her inside her Harvey apartment in the early morning hours of July 4, according to arrest records.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Charles Carollo wrote that Randy Johnson had been dating the victim for 10 months when he was involved in the physical altercation in an apartment in the 4100 block of Lac du Bay Drive around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday.

He “brutally and physically abused” the woman by choking and strangling her, the report claims, and repeatedly struck her in the face and body.

The woman went to get a gun and shot Johnson, who suffered a non-life threatening wound to the groin.

Johnson was taken to the hospital. The woman, meanwhile, called police and told them that she shot the boyfriend, according to Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Col. John Fortunato.

“I shot him, I couldn’t get him off of me,” the woman told police. She was taken to the Sheriff’s Office detectives’ bureau, the arrest record said, where she gave a recorded statement about the incident.

Johnson, 31, was booked on a count of domestic abuse battery by strangulation on July 5 after being released from Interim LSU Hospital in New Orleans. He is being held at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center.

Fortunato said that no charges are being considered against the woman.
