Louisiana Self-Defense: Harvey man shot girlfriend's ex after he stormed house :: 10/15/2015
A Harvey man shot his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend in the chest with a shotgun after the ex-boyfriend forced his way into the couple's home on Sunday night (Oct. 11), authorities said. Douglas Moody, 31, of Belle Chasse, suffered wounds to his chest, neck and head, according to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office arrest report.
Moody's former girlfriend called 911 on Sunday about 11:15 p.m. and told operators he had contacted her several times threatening to harm her and her new boyfriend. Moody – the father of her child -- told the woman he planned to drag her out of her house, kick her teeth in and kill her new boyfriend, the arrest report said.
She frantically called 911 a second time, crying. A JPSO report didn't indicate what she said in that call. Within minutes, operators received another call, this time from the woman's new boyfriend. He told operators that he had just shot a man, according to the report.
Deputies arrived at the couple's residence in the 500 block of Second Avenue in Harvey and found Moody lying wounded on the front porch, the report said.
The woman, her new boyfriend and her daughter told deputies Moody came to the house and immediately began fighting with the former girlfriend's new beau. The unidentified man suffered an injury.
Sheriff's Office reports from that night indicated two people had been shot, but no information was available Wednesday afternoon about the new boyfriend's wounds.
The man told deputies that at one point Moody charged the front door and forced his way into the house. That's when the man said he shot Moody once in the chest, the report said.
The case is still under investigation. But the arrest report noted that the man "used the shotgun in self defense" based on the threats and Moody's behavior.
Moody, of 202 Byrd St., Belle Chasse, was taken to University Medical Center in New Orleans where he was listed in critical condition Sunday.
Authorities booked Moody with home invasion, domestic abuse battery, being a fugitive from another jurisdiction and six outstanding attachments, jail records said. No bond has been set.
*This story has been changed. Jail records indicated that Moody had been released to the correctional facility. While he has been booked with charges, he has not yet been released from he hospital.
