Louisiana Self-Defense: Business owner turns tables on robber, who now faces charges :: 12/15/2016

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) - A Shreveport man will be going to jail as quick as he gets out of the hospital.

Police say 36-year-old Michael Kelly, of the 600 block of Springhill Avenue, was taken to University Health for treatment of multiple gunshot wounds early Tuesday afternoon.

Once Kelly is released, police Cpl. Marcus Hines said, he'll be booked into Shreveport City Jail on 1 count each of armed robbery, being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and resisting an officer. He also has an outstanding warrant charging him with having no driver's license.

Kelly was taken to the hospital after a man tried to rob a west Shreveport business and fired a gun at the owner.

The gunman missed and, instead, was wounded himself.

It happened at Henley Manufacturing in the 4200 block of Pro Street.

A 71-year-old was working inside his shop when a man entered the business and asked to use the restroom, Hines said. When the visitor exited the restroom, he drew a handgun, beat the owner and robbed him of his wallet.

The owner, whose name police have not released, managed to fight off his attacker.

The gunman began firing shots at the owner as he retreated.

The owner got his own gun and shot at the robber, striking him 3 times.

The wounded man ran outside and collapsed in the roadway in front of the business.

Detectives believe someone in a gold or silver SUV then tried to retrieve the wounded man but drove off before police arrived. Now authorities are trying to identify and locate the vehicle and its driver, Hines said.
